Now that you have joined college, your first thought is “how to make friends in college.” Of course, you are going to have some future friends already in the shape of your roommates unless it was hate at first sight. Along with that, you are going to make some friends in your classes. If you did not manage to do that when you were at high school, it is time to change now that you are at college. Bookworms and those shy people, always hiding away in the library are not very social so try not to be of that ilk. It is easier to make friends with students of your gender first.
How to Make Friends in College Rule 1 – Don’t Be Needy
Here is one tip which I found very useful. Try not to look as if you are in need of friends right now. However, be cheerful, pleasant and helpful to all your acquaintances. Remember that your college life is going to be full of people of different personalities. Some come here to study, some come here to play. You have to carefully choose the group, which you want to join, and which has like-minded interests, common to your group. You might find a number of shy people, who have the same interests as you do. Sit by them without talking for a couple of days. Smile pleasantly, when they look at you. Within a week, you might find yourself talking to them. Some of them are hesitant to talk to you, so you can start with just ordinary questions like “do you have such and such book please?” If one does not answer, another will. This is the easiest way how to make friends in college.

How to Make Friends in College Rule 2 – Make the Right Kind of Friends
Do not act desperate and pushy, like having a crush on the most popular student in the college and trying to get into his or her group. That group is going to be made up of supercilious and possibly spoiled brats. They are used to getting their own way, and for them, friendship does not mean anything. Of course, if you are richer than them, they are going to try to make your acquaintance. Smile pleasantly at them and tell them that you would rather prefer being friendless, than being a part of such a snobbish, useless and spoiled brat group. This is an obvious stereotype though, and things could be much different in your situation.
Naturally, you are under the impression that this is going to be counterproductive. No, it is not, because this “confrontation” is going to go around the college grapevine and you are going to find yourself being besieged by a number of people who want to become your acquaintances and friends. That is because anybody who has the strength of mind and strong personality not to bow to the most popular faction in the university or college is going to be a power with which to reckon. It sounds uncomfortable but if you want to learn how to make friends in college that are worth your time, you should consider this.
“Ummm, you see, I am just too shy and you are telling me to be strong enough to tell somebody I do not want to be friends with, right to her face? I really cannot do that…” This is just an excuse used by people who are too lazy to make an effort to make friends or not make undesirable friends. So now that you know how to make friends in college, go right out in the campus and make some new acquaintances, right now!
